Derived from the Spanish noun for lark, tracing back to the Latin alauda. The name had virtually no footprint in the United States until the late twentieth century, when it climbed rapidly alongside a growing bilingual population and the broadcast of a popular 1995 Mexican telenovela bearing the title. It entered common circulation without ever having passed through Ellis Island ledgers.

Hearing the name today reliably suggests someone who spent their childhood around the mid-2000s and possesses a driver license that is still relatively new. It reads as fluent, collegiate, and predominantly western. Two out of three people who carry it are members of Generation Z. It has yet to attend a fiftieth high school reunion.
