The name traces to the Ancient Greek Berenike, a dialectal compound translating to bearer of victory. After centuries of Mediterranean use, English speakers adopted the contracted spelling during the seventeenth century. American naming records show regular adoption starting in the late nineteenth century as a no-nonsense household staple.

The name reads like a rotary telephone on a polished hallway table. Today it calls up an aunt who labels frozen casseroles with masking tape and owns shears capable of cutting linoleum.
