Brooklyn

The name traces to the Dutch municipality of Breukelen, historically understood to denote broken land or marshland. Dutch colonists established the Long Island settlement in 1646, centuries before its 1898 consolidation into New York City. American parents paid little notice until 1972, when the borough made its first appearance in federal birth registration as a female given name.
