From the French form of the Roman cognomen Camilla, originally referring to an attendant at religious rites. France treated the name as unisex, but American registers recorded it almost entirely for girls after 1880. Greta Garbo brought the title to American movie theaters in 1936, cementing its domestic spelling.

The name reads like someone who owns linen napkins and actually uses them. It carries a faint European accent without requiring an actual passport. Although it has appeared on birth certificates every year since 1880, more than half of all living Camilles are under thirty. It sounds like someone who leaves the party at ten without making a speech.
