The name is a French feminine diminutive of Charles, which derives from the Germanic root for a free person. British usage expanded after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz married King George III in 1761, leaving her name on American colonial geography from Virginia to the Carolinas. American registries logged it steadily from 1880 onward, treating it as a modest perennial before a swift ascent in the early twenty-first century.
