Chuck originated in early modern England as an affectionate nursery form of Charles, likely influenced by the Middle English term of endearment chuk. American parents began writing it directly onto birth certificates in the early twentieth century, bypassing the formal long form altogether. It settled in as a standalone midcentury staple before receding in the late twentieth century.
