Formed as an English variant of Adelbert, rooted in Germanic elements meaning noble and bright. It spread across the American interior during the late nineteenth century as a neighborly alternative to Albert and Gilbert. By the early twentieth century, it had settled into rural ledger books across the Midwest and South.

The name reads like someone who knows how to rebuild a carburetor without consulting a manual. It peaked in 1932 and never made the migration to suburban subdivisions. Today it suggests an average bearer around age sixty-six who possesses several pairs of work boots in varying stages of retirement. It does not attempt to sound contemporary.
