Doyle

Anglicized from the Irish surname Ó Dubhghaill, meaning descendant of the dark stranger, an early Gaelic term for Norse settlers. American parents adopted it as a given name in the late nineteenth century, treating it as a compact single-syllable alternative to longer family surnames. It drifted inland across the South and lower Midwest through the early decades of the twentieth century.

A Doyle is almost inevitably pictured in a work shirt, leaning against the bed of a pickup truck with the engine idling. The name peaked in 1931 and today half of all living bearers belong to the Baby Boomer generation. It does not carry the polish of contemporary Celtic imports like Liam or Declan. It sounds instead like someone who knows how to rebuild a carburetor without looking at the manual.
