Derived from the Hebrew Elisheva, meaning 'my God is an oath,' filtered through Greek and Latin records. The s spelling became standard across German, Scandinavian, and French orthography. In the United States, it served as an intentional, slightly quieter alternative to the dominant spelling with a z.
