A nineteenth-century American contraction of Eleanor, borrowing the cadence of Nora while keeping the older prefix. The spelling settled into county records throughout the late eighteen-hundreds without direct help from European courts. It operated largely as a practical solution when a family wanted the weight of tradition without the three full syllables.

The name lands with the dry snap of a wooden screen door. Hearing it today brings to mind someone who still balances a paper checkbook and remembers when the bypass was built. With an average bearer age of seventy, it sits firmly in the territory of aluminum storm windows and recipe boxes organized by handwritten index cards. It does not sound like someone easily convinced by television commercials.
