A variant of the Germanic Erwin—rooted in elements meaning honor or boar paired with friend—that also absorbed influences from the Scottish river name Irving. In late nineteenth-century America, the spelling took hold across agricultural and industrial hubs as a brisk alternative to its Scottish and German cousins. It remained a steadfast fixture in the registry through the first half of the twentieth century.
