Originating as a diminutive of Frances, which traces through Old French to the Latin name for a Frank or freeman. It broke away as an independent given name in English parish registers centuries ago. In the United States, it served as a standalone favorite throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The name reads as entirely antique, belonging to someone who kept canning jars in the cellar and wore an apron with real utility. It arrived at its statistical summit during the First World War and largely cleared the delivery rooms before the mid-century modern wave. A Fannie is rarely pictured under sixty today.
