Gretchen

German diminutive of Margarete, built by adding the suffix -chen to the pet form Grete. It entered American ledgers in the late nineteenth century alongside waves of German immigration before detaching from its ancestry entirely in the mid-twentieth century. By the 1970s, it had become standard suburban stock.

The name lands with a solid, two-syllable crunch that resists being softened. Most living Gretchens belong squarely to Generation X, arriving in hospital nurseries around 1973 with station wagons waiting in the parking lot. It suggests somebody who played field hockey in wool kilts and still knows how to drive a manual transmission. It is hard to say in a whisper.
