Irma

Derived from the Germanic element ermen, meaning whole or universal. It crossed into American usage primarily through nineteenth-century German immigration, appearing regularly in birth ledgers well before the First World War. Later decades saw it find a lasting home in Spanish-speaking communities across Texas and the American Southwest.

The name conjures handwritten recipe card boxes, well-organized linen closets, and people who knew how to preserve fruit without checking an index. It sits comfortably between the front parlor of 1920 and a midcentury church auxiliary meeting. There is zero nonsense in its two syllables.
