Originally the traditional Cornish spelling of Guinevere, derived from the Welsh Gwenhwyfar. George Bernard Shaw used the Jennifer form in his 1906 play The Doctor's Dilemma, which helped push the name into broader English usage. In twentieth-century America, this single-n variant offered parents a lighter visual alternative to the decade-dominating standard spelling.

The name reads as an intentional omission. It suggests a bearer who spends a lifetime watching cashiers, registrars, and airline desk agents type an automatic second consonant, only to correct them without looking up. The average bearer is around forty-five years old, placing her squarely in the prime of cassette tapes and station wagons.
