Formed as a French elaboration of Juliana, rooted in the Roman family name Julius. American ledgers picked it up sporadically in the early twentieth century before settling into steady suburban use by the late 1980s. It functioned as a slightly more formal alternative to Julie and a smoother alternative to Julianna.

The name reads like a college catalog from 1989 printed on heavy cream stock. It carries an air of deliberate penmanship, moderate athletic participation, and sensible outerwear. A Julianne is rarely confused with anyone else in the room, mostly because the room had three Jessicas instead. She is assumed to know how to address an envelope correctly on the first attempt.
