Karen

A Danish contraction of Katherine, rooted in the Greek name Aikaterine. It functioned as an everyday vernacular form across Scandinavia for centuries before migrating across the Atlantic in the late nineteenth century. American parents registered it sparingly through the 1930s before adopting it en masse during the postwar baby boom.

A Karen is pictured holding a clipboard or turning off hallway lights to save electricity. The name reads as decisively administrative, shaped by an era of carbon paper, rotary dials, and vinyl bench seats. With fifty-nine percent of living bearers belonging to the baby boom, it carries the cadence of someone who remembers when long-distance telephone rates dropped after eight in the evening. Recent delivery wards have nearly cleared out, logging only 175 births in 2025. It now sits in quiet retirement alongside the slide rule.
