Directly borrowed from the flower, which traces back through Old English to the Latin lilium. English speakers adopted floral naming in the late nineteenth century alongside an enthusiasm for botanical gardens. In the American ledger, it maintained a modest foothold in the eighteen-eighties before sliding into quiet disuse mid-century and returning in force after 2000.

A Lily tends to be pictured carrying a canvas tote bag and a stainless-steel water bottle covered in vinyl stickers. The name reads overwhelmingly young, belonging almost entirely to teenagers and children rather than retirees. Nearly half of all living holders belong to Generation Z, with another forty-five percent in Generation Alpha. In a modern ninth-grade classroom, calling the name aloud usually requires a clarifying surname initial.
