Lucinda

Formed as an elaboration of Lucia, tracing back to the Latin noun for light. Miguel de Cervantes popularized the coinage in 1605 for a character in Don Quixote, after which seventeenth-century English poets and playwrights imported it into literature. American registers recorded it steadily starting in 1880, though it always stayed well below the top tiers.

The name suggests an acoustic guitar, a handwritten recipe card, and a garden where everything is planted on purpose. It reached its high-water mark in 1957 without ever crowding school attendance sheets the way Linda or Susan did. The sound carries nineteenth-century parlor manners into the mid-twentieth century. Most listeners picture someone who knows how to can peaches.
