Lula originated primarily as a pet form of Louise, Luella, or Lucy before establishing itself as an independent entry on birth certificates in the late nineteenth century. Its linguistic roots trace back to Germanic names containing the element for fame, alongside Latin roots associated with light. American parents in the late 1800s routinely registered it on its own merits without the longer formal precursor.

The name brings to mind screen doors, porch swings, and sheet music from the 1920s. Lula spent the early decades of the twentieth century as a reliable household presence before spending several generations in relative quiet. Today, roughly three-quarters of living bearers belong to the Silent or Baby Boomer cohorts, though a small nursery revival is underway. It reads like a name from an era when correspondence arrived by train.
