Mabel

The name derives from the medieval English Amabel, a contraction of the Late Latin amabilis, meaning lovable. It drifted out of common speech after the Middle Ages until nineteenth-century British writers dusted it off for historical fiction. American parents adopted it wholesale in the late Victorian era, turning a medieval relic into a standard front-porch staple.

The name presents an arithmetic trick: with an estimated average age of thirty-five, almost no living Mabel is actually thirty-five. Nearly half the living cohort belongs to Generation Alpha, while another seventeen percent belongs to the Silent Generation. A Mabel reads either as a toddler negotiating over organic applesauce or an octogenarian who remembers when lard came in tins. The name skips the middle decades entirely, leaving the thirty-something bracket conspicuously unoccupied.
