Originated in Middle English as a pet form of Eleanor, Helen, or Ellen, shaped by the re-bracketing of the phrase mine Elle into my Nell. It established itself as an independent given name centuries before appearing in the inaugural 1880 American tallies. In the United States, it functioned both as a self-contained choice and as an informal address for longer lineage names.

A Nell is rarely encountered in middle management.
