In Scandinavia it developed as a masculine diminutive of Olaf, but late-nineteenth-century American record keepers treated it almost strictly as a feminine name. It circulated either as a truncated relative of Viola and Olga or as a standalone two-syllable entry alongside short vowel-heavy names like Ina and Ona. The American peak landed in 1920 with 772 recorded births before fading into family bibles.

The name suggests an embroidered hand towel preserved in cedar shavings. Modern hearers usually assume it belongs to someone's great-aunt who baked biscuits in a cast-iron skillet and never owned a television. It does not carry modern ornamentation. The sound starts and finishes in two syllables without a consonant to slow it down.
