Derived from the French name Rémy, tracing back to the Latin Remigius, meaning oarsman, or to the ancient Gaulish tribe known as the Remi. It spent centuries in France as a traditional male name associated with the fifth-century bishop of Reims. American parents adopted the accent-free spelling almost entirely in the twenty-first century, predominantly for girls.
