Derived from the Late Latin Romaeus, signifying a pilgrim journeying to Rome. Shakespeare permanently anchored the name in English drama in the late sixteenth century, which discouraged casual American adoption for generations. Steady domestic use began climbing in the late twentieth century before hitting unprecedented volume in the 2020s.

For four centuries, the name was primarily understood as a literary hazard. In contemporary classrooms, however, it belongs to someone actively trading snacks at lunch. Over half of all living American Romeos belong to Generation Alpha. The Shakespearean balcony reference remains inescapable, but it now mostly surfaces during roll call.
