Sierra

Borrowed directly from the Spanish word for mountain range, which traces back to the Latin serra, meaning saw. American parents began registering it sporadically in 1940 before turning it into a staple of the late 1990s nature-name boom.

The name reads as sunlit, fleece-lined, and fundamentally tied to the turn of the millennium. Most Americans who carry it were born right around 1998, when geography names occupied a solid shelf in kindergarten registries. It suggests someone who spent third grade wearing butterfly clips and now owns multiple reusable water bottles covered in national park stickers. It is almost impossible to imagine a Sierra holding a Victorian parasol.
