Sue originated as an English spoken shortening of Susan, which traces through French and Latin to the Hebrew Shoshannah, meaning lily. While long treated as an informal domestic address, American parents began registering the standalone syllable as an independent legal name in the late nineteenth century. By the late 1940s, the abbreviated form had shed its formal antecedent entirely on state birth certificates.

The name reads as a woman who learned long division with graphite pencils and kept the method. Around sixty-six percent of living bearers belong to the baby boom generation, with an average age of seventy-one.
