Teddy

Teddy originated as an English diminutive for Theodore, from the Greek Theodōros, as well as Edward. The nickname gained permanent American currency through Theodore Roosevelt and the subsequent toy bear phenomenon of 1902. By the late nineteenth century, parents were already bypassing the formal root names to enter Teddy directly onto birth certificates.

A Teddy reads as either a grandfather who coached youth baseball or a toddler in corduroy overalls, with very little intermediate territory. The name peaked in 1949, meaning the largest living segment belongs to the Boomer generation, though modern registers show a steady twenty-first-century rebound. It suggests someone willing to fix a small appliance with whatever spare wire is on hand.
