Derived as an English diminutive of Tobias, which traces to the Hebrew name Tobiah. English potters in the eighteenth century shaped earthenware beer jugs into grinning figures called Toby jugs, giving the short form its own cultural footprint. American parents began registering it directly on birth certificates in the late nineteenth century rather than treating it as a nickname.
