Vanessa

Jonathan Swift invented the name in 1713 for his autobiographical poem Cadenus and Vanessa, stitching together the surname of his friend Esther Vanhomrigh and the pet name Essa. The poem was published in 1726, but the name remained mostly confined to British literary circles for the next century. American parents began entering it onto birth certificates in 1900, after which twentieth-century paperbacks and television serials propelled it into broad circulation.

A Vanessa tends to be pictured somewhere near the end of the 1980s, standing beside a kitchen wall phone with a coiled cord. The name reads as polished, faintly dramatic, and anchored to an era of studio yearbook portraits. With an estimated average age of thirty-seven, it belongs largely to the generation that remembers commercial breaks and dial-up modems. It has never once sounded like a name suited for chopping firewood.
