Isabelle

A French development of Isabel, which itself travelled from the Hebrew Elisheba through medieval Provence and Castile. American ledgers recorded it in small, steady numbers throughout the late nineteenth century before a sharp revival in the early two-thousands. It arrived as a slightly more tailored alternative to Isabella.

The double-l-e ending suggests a person who was given a middle name with equal care. Because the median Isabelle was born around 2007, the name belongs largely to high school yearbooks and freshman dorm rosters. It carries a faint literary polish without feeling antique. In practice, most Isabelles answer to a one-syllable nickname by fourth grade.
