Ivan

The name developed as an Eastern European rendering of John, tracing back through Byzantine Greek Ioannes. It remained largely overseas until the late nineteenth century, appearing in American federal birth records at the start of documentation in 1880. For most of the twentieth century it hovered as a minor entry before accelerating in the nineteen-nineties and reaching its peak in 2004.

The name reads less like an imperial ruler and more like a twenty-seven-year-old clearing unread notifications from a smartphone. Because thirty-seven percent of living bearers belong to Generation Z, an Ivan is routinely pictured carrying a metal travel mug and muting a group chat. Another twenty-eight percent belong to Generation Alpha, so the name spends equal time printed on adhesive labels above preschool coat hooks. It lands with two flat syllables and zero interest in making conversation in an elevator.
