Lorene

A late nineteenth-century American offshoot of Lora and a phonetic cousin to the French territorial name Lorraine, both drawing roots from the Latin laurus for laurel. The spelling spread through the South and lower Midwest during the post-Civil War decades, popularized in part by sheet-music parlor ballads. It established itself as a standalone census fixture by 1880.

The name Lorene brings to mind an aunt who kept a jar of ribbon candy that remained unopened for entire presidential administrations. It peaked in 1920, placing the bulk of its living bearers comfortably past retirement age. It suggests handwritten recipe cards, butter mints, and an unshakeable faith in linoleum.
