Mercedes

From the Spanish title María de las Mercedes, translating to Mary of Mercies, which traces back to the Latin merces for reward or favor. The name entered the automotive lexicon in 1901 when Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek commissioned a line from Daimler named after his daughter. American record books logged it consistently from the late nineteenth century onward, with a sharp spike toward the end of the twentieth.

The name occupies a narrow corridor between Spanish liturgical tradition and ninety-horsepower German engineering. A Mercedes today is almost certainly in her thirties or early twenties, with roughly three-quarters of living bearers split between Millennials and Generation Z. She has had to explain at least once that she was not named after a lease agreement. The name sounds polished, distinct, and slightly louder than the rest of the room.
