From the Latin imperial title meaning majestic or consecrated, famously granted to Gaius Octavius in 27 BCE. It moved into English registers during the Renaissance and crossed to the American colonies as an ambitious classical import. After a century of quiet disuse, it staged a full nursery revival in the twenty-first century.

The name suggests a nineteenth-century surveyor or a Roman marble bust with a chipped nose. In reality, over half of its living bearers are currently under the age of twelve.
